I’m writing to update the community on the many and varied issues that have come up, starting with power outages over the weekend and culminating in printing problems across campus Monday.
On Saturday there were several scheduled power outages between 9am and Noon. The outages uncovered some faulty battery-backup equipment in a critical part of our network. The network equipment didn’t restore itself when the power came back on, and as a result the college web server (www.haverford.edu), Storage and wireless access throughout the campus was interrupted. This was resolved around Noon on Saturday.
In addition, the power outages disabled networking equipment in the Observatory. Service was restored this morning.
On Sunday evening, at approximately 7PM, we learned of a problem impacting Dorm Wireless. For many users wireless access wasn’t available and the situation was resolved about 12:45AM on Monday morning.
On Monday a server problem here in IITS caused printing to fail for Windows users sending print jobs to //accprinters. The server problem was identified and resolved by midday Monday.
At this point we believe all of our systems are up and running with normal service. If you find that this isn’t the case, please drop us a note at ProDesk@haverford.edu.
On behalf of my colleagues here, I apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and flexibility while we worked out our weekend gremlins.
