The ProDesk is staffed by full-time employees who are here to assist with anything related to your desktop computer.
If your computer malfunctions, IITS will facilitate repairs in accordance with our policy stated below. Upon request, we will provide temporary loaner computers to faculty and academic staff whose office computers are being repaired.
Faculty Office Computers
IITS will pay for repairs and maintenance on the standard model for four years. If the repair is expensive and the computer is more than three years old, then we may choose to replace rather than repair the computer. Further, if the computer is physically damaged while in the care of the faculty member, the faculty member may be asked to bear the cost of some repairs of the equipment.
Departmentally Owned Supported Macintosh and Windows Computers
If your department purchased a system in accordance with IITS’s support policy, your department is responsible for paying for the parts required for repair; the department is not charged for labor costs. Computers are considered to have a four-year life cycle. The Computing Center will generally decline to repair computers older than four years, as the cost of the repair is often more than the value of the computer.
Personally Owned Macintosh and Windows Computers
To make hardware repairs easy and affordable, we always recommend that you purchase the manufacturer’s extended warranty when buying one of our recommended computer models. The Dell CompleteCare warranty covers equipment failure and accidental damage (like liquid spills and drops). Dell CompleteCare also includes next-day onsite repair. The equivalent Apple warranty covers equipment failure, but does not include coverage for accidental damage or on-site repair.
For Dell Computers: Contact Dell
For Dell systems needing repair, you can contact Dell Directly for service. If you contact Dell for service under the recommended warranty, you can arrange for a technician to work on your machine in your dorm or in ProDesk. Dell will repair your machine for a fee if your computer is no longer covered under warranty. If you need assistance, the ProDesk can help you contact Dell.
For Apple Computers: Contact Apple
Unfortunately, Apple does not offer on-site service as part of the recommended warranty. Instead, Macs are repaired at authorized repair centers. For the fastest service, the Apple Store in Suburban Square is a convenient, local option for repairs. Located less than a mile from Haverford, the Suburban Square Apple Store (between Urban Outfitters and Macy’s) has both a large sales and authorized repair facility. Another convenient option is Apple’s phone support. In some cases, Apple phone tech support can help you mail your computer directly to Apple (they will send you a box).
If you choose to not have the Apple Store repair your computer, you can have your computer serviced by Haverford’s repair technicians. Please be aware that Haverford charges a $75 facilitation fee regardless of warranty status for all Apple repairs. If your machine is no longer covered by warranty or experienced accidental damage while covered under warranty, repair costs at Haverford will also include parts and our hourly labor charge.
For Other Computers:
If your machine has hardware problem and is neither Apple nor Dell, the ProDesk can help you identify your service options. Typically, this includes contacting the manufacturer for the nearest authorized service provider.
