Choosing a Cell Phone or Mobile Device

AT&T Wireless and Verizon Wireless are both approved vendors for wireless voice and data purposes.  Each provider has strengths and weaknesses in several areas including coverage and service quality, device function and monthly cost.  IITS Client Services staff can work with you and your senior manager to help identify the right combination of provider and device to fit your work requirements and areas of travel.  Contact the IITS ProDesk by email or call 610.896.1480 to get started.

 

Supported Devices

IITS supports use of the Apple iPad, iPhone, Android devices with physical or touchscreen-based keyboards, and most standard cell phones.  Blackberry devices are not supported.  Recommendations and minimum specifications are listed below. Use the links in the table below to learn more about each device.

Type Device Description
Wireless Tablet Apple iPad No keyboard.  Touch sensitive screen.  Connects using either the AT&T or Verizon wireless networks, or using a local area connection like Haverford Secure-Wireless or Dorm-Wireless.  The device has a much larger screen than the iPhone 4, but cannot be used to make telephone calls.  Suitable for web browsing, basic document editing, email, one-on-one or very small group presentations.  A rich collection of apps are available through Apple’s AppStore, however the AppStore is the only source of licensed software for the device.  Prices for apps vary widely. 

 

Smartphone Apple iPhone No keyboard.  Touch sensitive screen.  Connects using either the AT&T or Verizon wireless networks, or using a local area connection like Haverford Secure-Wireless or Dorm-Wireless.  The device has a much smaller screen than the iPad and can be used for both apps and telephone calls. Suitable for web browsing, email, text and media messaging, and includes a basic camera.  A rich collection of apps are available through Apple’s AppStore, however the AppStore is the only source of licensed software for the device.  Prices for apps vary widely.

Keyboard styles vary – may be touch sensitive screen or physical keyboard.  Specifications vary.  Minimum recommended specifications: 

  • 2GB or more internal memory, with option to expand internam memory
  • 320×240 resolution screen (devices with keyboards)
  • 800×480 resolution screen (devices without keyboards)
  • Wireless data compatibility: 3G minimum.  4G recommended.
  • WiFi Support: B/G minimum. B/G/N recommended.
  • Camera: Rear facing 3MP minimum.  Rear and front facing 4MP or better recommended.

  • 2GB or more internal memory
  • Full size keyboard for those with texting plans

Cell Phone for Heavy Outdoor Use, in Wet Areas or Under Extreme Conditions Motorola Tundra (AT&T)
Motorola Barrage (Verizon)
Features include Push-to-Talk functions.
