  • Do Not Violate Copyright Law

    From http://www.eff.org/wp/how-not-get-sued-file-sharing

"As of July 2006, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has sued over 20,000 music fans for file sharing in just under three years. In 2004, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) joined this misguided, anti-consumer crusade. Filing lawsuits against anonymous "Doe" defendants, the RIAA and MPAA seek to uncover the identities of P2P users and force them to pay thousands of dollars in settlements."

You could be at risk of being sued by the RIAA if you are sharing music or other copyrighted materials on your computer -- even if you purchased the materials legally.

Many P2P applications run in the background -- even after you quit the program or restart your computer. Most students who get caught breaking copyright law at Haverford didn't even know they were doing it.

Protect yourself. Don't use P2P software or if you do, make sure you shut it down, disable file sharing, or aren't serving any copyrighted material.

  • Copyright Policies and Resources

Haverford College policy prohibits the receipt, possession, or distribution of copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. Federal law also prohibits such actions. In accordance with U.S law, Haverford must respond to instances of copyright infringement when notified by copyright holders. Failure to respond appropriately places Haverford at risk of losing access to the Internet and opens the college to liability for the copyright infringement. To help you stay informed and safe, Haverford provides a number of copyright resources.

  • How do I Determine if an Email is Safe?

Email "from" addresses are easily forged. Use common sense before opening ANY attachment or clicking ANY links in messages.

According to the CERT Coordination Center at the Software Engineering Institute, operated by Carnegie Mellon University, you should only trust a message that passes all of these tests:

    • The Know test: Is the email from someone that you know?
    • The Received test: Have you received email from this sender before?
    • The Expect test: Were you expecting email with an attachment from this sender?
    • The Sense test: Does email from the sender with the contents as described in the Subject line and the name of the attachment(s) make sense?

For example, would you expect the sender-- let's say your Mother-- to send you an email message with the Subject line "Here you have, ;o)" that contains a message with attachment-- let's say "AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs"? A message like that probably doesn't make sense. In fact, it happens to be an instance of the Anna Kournikova worm, and reading it can damage your system.

Learn more about email safety, read: http://www.cert.org/homeusers/email-attachments.html
